Worlds Apart

Characters and concept created in collaboration with unpaid carers and older people living in residential care homes

Written by Elijah Young, Directed by Poppy Crawshaw

Young carer, Egg, 13 takes audiences on an adventure as they escape to the virtual reality world, where defeating evil space villains and the risk of getting sucked into giant black holes weirdly makes them feel safe.

As 3 generations are thrown together in a house in Seaburn after years of being apart, Penny, Egg and Helen go on a unlikely journey of discovery as they face up to monsters online and in the real world.

A lively celebration of ageing and human resilience, told through the eyes of a 13 year old young gamer.

Worlds Apart nailed the levels of honesty and raw emotion that can be felt, alongside isolation by unpaid carers. It was lovely to see the love and humanity still there.

The project

Woven Nest were delivering an intergenerational linking project in Sunderland in collaboration with Sunderland Young Carers and The Laurels Care Home, when an interesting story around care and intergenerational relationships began to emerge. After engaging a third group in the project, Writers Who Care, a peer support group for unpaid carers, they began to work with writer, Elijah Young to tie together three interesting perspectives on family and unpaid care.
